Mariinsky Ballet: Jewels - Los Angeles
George Balanchine's Jewels*
With live music by Mariinsky Orchestra
Choreographed by George Balanchine in 1967, Jewels is recognized as the first great abstract work of classical ballet. The ballet features three acts: “Emeralds,” “Rubies” and “Diamonds,” with music by Fauré, Stravinsky and Tchaikovsky, respectively.
Balanchine used jewelry imagery to inform his choreography. Each act is composed in stark contrast, united only by the dancers’ dazzling costumes inlaid with colored gems that correspond to the title. The Mariinsky Ballet is the crown jewel of the dance world, celebrated for its dancers of unmatched skill and majesty. Be mesmerized by this dazzling company’s performance of George Balanchine’s Jewels.
